Roadside Family Portraits

AltF Workshop

Some images from the Very AltF workshop down in Decatur, Ga.
John Michael Cooper and his lovely wife Dalissa were the fine people who conducted this workshop. It was hosted by Zack Arias of Used Film Studios in Decatur, GA. Zack is also the teacher of the famous One Light Workshop. He is a great guy and so very cool.
I had a great time and learned alot while down there. I am eager to work on some of the ideas I was shown during my time down there.

Also, some of the pictures below show some families being shot. The pictures of John and myself sitting on the plastic couch was after our family shoot on Saturday afternoon in side lot of a truck stop. Red dirt, mud puddles, a clear plastic couch, and 95 degree heat. What more could you ask for for family pictures. :-)

The reason for all of this is a project that John was inspired to do and is following through on his 30 day RV trip to his scheduled workshops around the U.S. Photographers families are like the cobbler's son who had no shoes. We take pictures of the wife, children, pets, and everybody else but so rarely are we in the pictures. John and Simply Canvas have partnered up to fix that situation. He is calling them his Roadside Family Portraits. You can see some of them here at John's Blog. It is family portraits of photographers families with a couple of stipulations. Has to be a roadside involved, by a road, on a road, dress is all mis-match and whatever everyone is comfortable wearing with the idea that the image will be dated with 10 years. Also, everyone needs to be holding something that is special to them. ( FYI, I had a Alabama football shirt, a football, my camera on the ground, Steph had a book, Leaves of Grass, and Gabby had a big bag of Skittles! She loves those things!)

The photographer will be given a canvas family portrait. The only stipulation is that it is to be "Paid Forward". I love the idea of the "Pay it Forward!"

I want to hear from any professional photographers in our area as to why you need and want your family portrait done. We will be selecting a family soon so let's hear from you. The only thing John asks is that you be willing and prepared to "Pay it Forward" to another photographer's family. John mentioned to one person along the way, "Remember this is for your children, it's not for you." It's not the "PERFECT" picture we are after, it is a slice of your life on one day and that's what your kids and mine will remember.
We won't have the plastic couch, but I have some cool ideas!

AltF Workshop...Day One

I'm down at the Very AltF workshop in Decatur, GA. The first image is of John Michael Cooper doing his thing. I was able to sit in on half of the workshop today and help out with his family "Roadside Portraits" he is doing on his trip around the U.S. Since photographers never have pictures of themselves with their families he is doing it on his travels and with the understanding that that photographer will "Pay it Forward" to another family.

Steph wanted to come down and John was going to take our family picture but she is helping out at a Children's home and was unable to make the trip down to ATL. I talked with John and Dalisa about how disappointed Steph was so we are going to make the portraits happen on their trip through Charlotte on Saturday! Steph and I are both excited about this! Very Cool! The Cooper's are so cool and down to earth.

I had some baby pictures to take today, (which I will be posting later) and Gabby was just fascinated with the lights and backdrop , so we took advantage of that time and snapped off a few pictures!

We had alot of fun. FYI, it was my wife's idea to hold our child upside down! I was all for it, but it was her idea. We saw my favorite photographer, John Michael Cooper of AltF, posing some photographer's children like that and we thought it was hilarious.

I will finally get a chance to meet a guy who inspired me to step off into this life. I will be at a workshop of his down in ATL next weekend and I'm am really psyched!

Royal Family Kids Camp

Stephanie and I just got back from a camp for 7 to 12 year olds where we were counselors for the whole week. It's great to be back sleeping in my bed, but it was very worth the time that was invested into these young lives.
I'm posting from my friend's blog a entry that he made concerning the camp. He said it so well, I have no need to add anything further right now.

Lessons From Camp

Brandy and I just finished a week at Royal Family Kids Camp. This is a camp that we have participated in for the past three years. The camp ministers to kids 6-11 who have been victims of abuse and are now in the foster system in some capacity. It was once again an amazing week. I always leave this camp having a renewed understanding of why the book of James says that religion that is acceptable to God is to take care of widows and orphans and to keep oneself from being contaminated by this world.

I could write about so many lessons about life, about love, and about God that God taught me this week through these kids. You may be reading about several of these lessons in upcoming blogs. The lesson that I want to talk about today deals with the Father's attention.

On Thursday I found myself sitting under a tree on the ground watching a ten year old boy blow bubbles. Not just any bubbles but very large bubbles with a large wand that he would dip in a bowl and then wave through the air. I know this does not sound very exciting and to be honest it wasn't. But I sat there with my full attention given to this young boy saying things like, "wow that's amazing" and "that's the biggest bubble I have ever seen." I wasn't really 'that' impressed but I wanted to let this boy know that he had my attention and to praise him every chance I got. Every time that he made a bubble he would look my way to hear my comment. If he messed up and the bubble burst before he could fully form it, he would look my way wondering what my reaction would be. I would simply say, "thats ok you will get this next one." This young boy acted as though he had never had a father that had been so totally engrossed and attentive to his actions. You could tell he was eating it up and soaked in the praise.

It was during this time that the Spirit softly spoke to me again. He said, "This is the same attention that your heavenly Father gives you." At first I thought to myself that God has better things to be attentive to than my bubble making. Then again the Spirit spoke to me and said, "this is why it is so important for earthly fathers to take the time to give full attention to their child's 'bubble making' so they will understand the love of the heavenly Father which is so much greater than the love of an earthly father." If an earthly father knows how to give attention to his child, how much more does the heavenly Father know how to give attention to His child.

So the next time you find yourself caught up in the mundane and ordinary 'bubble making' take time to look over at your heavenly Father and you just might hear him say 'well done, that was amazing."

Miller Family

The Miller Family had all of their children in this week and they asked me to come out and take pictures. We had a great day! The sun was bright, a cool breeze was blowing, and a good looking bunch of people! The whole family was so nice and gracious, even asked me to go and get Gabby and Steph and come back and have dinner with them. Such good people.
Phil, thanks for having me come out and be with your family for a few hours.
